I'll close this topic so we can start a new one for today's beta.

Ok, I reckon you'll see a big improvement to that figure with the new code later on today. Fingers crossed.

Looking forward to these next changes. Just another note on map drawing speeds (perhaps more relevant to Germany than other places). If the upper limit on airspace drawn on the chart is increased from the default (ie from 4000' to 6000') this also noticeably slows down redrawing time (this was where my 5-6 seconds came from, with FIR turned off,..although still acceptable and understandable). If the height is set back at the default setting of 4000' the redraw only takes about 2-3 seconds, which is fine.

We've changed the extended runways again, and the change will be in today's new beta release (when it happens). The "active" runway centreline (the closest one) remains the same, but the inactive ones are now less obstrusive. They are drawn as translucent green shaded arrows, with the runway identifier at the end. The length remains the same: they all project out to 15nm from the threshold. I look forward to hearing more feedback about them.

We have also made several performance optimizations that should speed up map redrawing by up to 40% on all devices, including when FIRs are turned on. Hopefully this will work well for the German case.

Hi Tim,

great news that you quickly found the issue re slow drawing charts. Have done a quick test here on the beta version and turning off the FIR's certainly seems to cure it. Redrawing with terrain shading and roads/railways turned on now only takes about 5-6 seconds. Look forward to the next updates. Let me know if you need any beta-testers in this part of the world. I expect to fly back to the UK from the Stuttgart area within the next 10 days and will let you know how the beta version performs on such a trip.

Thanks again!

I believe my colleague has confirmed in the Charts forum that the Bagby runway data has been corrected, but this is a chart data issue so you won't see it until the next chart update.

We have identified the slow drawing problem in Germany, and it's caused by drawing the flight information regions, which are very detailed. You're noticing this change because we turned them on in the beta release, and they've always been off by default previously. You can change their visibility in the preferences. Going forward, we have made them less detailed but this won't take effect until the next chart update. We have also turned them off again by default until we can optimize the FIR drawing process.

Very good News. Can I ask those who know Bagby (EGNG) if they feel the runway's position at that air field had been corrected. If not Can I ask Tim or other SD team members to look into it please? As said earlier I know some staunch SD supporters in that very busy field, and it would be worth getting the runway placement in order. I am sure that will be greatly appreciated.

Just an update. I flew with it last night into an airfield in scotland and the extended centreline thing was perfect. It is much better now it shows all available runways (i would say that because i suggested it) but there is a nice touch in that it highlights the active one. Also the ils style markings are much better than the black blob. I lined up 10 miles out for a runway that is quite hard to spot being behind a hill. Absolutely brilliant.

I also tried the instrument view on approach and that was great but it would be better if it was a split screen view or a semi-transparent overlay so you dont lose the moving map. Is that possible.

All in all some more lovely features. Well done.

Tim,

just to clarify, loading times for the beta version in the Chart Manager page (from when I click load until "loaded" appears are roughly similar to the benchmark times you mention. However it is the drawing time of the chart (chart appearing complete on the screen and touch screen responding again) which are far slower on the beta version for Germany and Benelux than on the previous version.

Hi Tim,

we also met briefly at Sywell. Since my last post I have re-loaded the previous non-beta version of Skydemon (2.1.2) onto my device (MicroSD card). The German chart (loaded in isolation) loads in a few seconds, the same as the UK chart. Adding Roads and Railways adds a little to this but even with terrain shading turned on, the chart loading time is the same as for the UK chart (quite acceptable) and re-drawing with all features on only takes a few seconds. The difference is definitely between the two versions of Skydemon, whereby the UK chart does not seem affected. Just for information, the area of Germany I am zooming into is around Stuttgart (EDDS) in case you want to compare on your device. If I revert to the Beta version (installed on another memory card), everything slows done again dramatically as soon as I select the Benelux or German Charts. The UK and France (which I have also just been checking) seem OK. Although it can take a while for terrain shading to appear, it doesn't lock the device while waiting and the map can be dragged around and it redraws as normal. I had the beta version installed on the other MicroSD card initially, so a problem with card cannot be the issue.

So the problem appears to relate to the loading of German and Benelux charts (until they appear fully on the screen) on the beta version (with or without terrain shading and roads/railways turned on). I have not tried any other charts than those mentioned here.
